This course is intended for: Governance Professionals; C-Suite Executives who are “Risk Owners” including CEO’s responsible for organizational risk; Board Members wishing to learn mechanics of ERM and oversight practices. Graduates will receive a “Certificate in Risk Management”

The current financial crisis and the previous crisis of ’08 & ’09 has revealed that many organizations do not effectively manage risks at the executive level, and that despite corporate charters requiring board risk oversight, many boards have not effectively actualized their obligations.

Effectiveness in the governance and execution of the risk function in an organization requires executives knowledgeable in risk management processes, with board members experienced in risk oversight. The executive team must “own” the key risks of the organization and must implement ERM best practices, often coordinated by an ERM Manager or a Chief Risk Officer, while the board must have a good basic understanding of the mechanics of ERM and what’s required of management. Critical to effective ERM is transparency, good communication and regular liaison between the executive team and the board. Governance professionals must understand the roles of the executives and the board.

This GPC risk program scopes at a high level and in summarized format, the key Elements and Fundamentals of ERM and can be used as a blueprint to assist executive teams in implementing ERM in their organizations. It details the role of organizational executives in managing risk and addresses the role the board should play in risk oversight.

This course introduces various aspects of enterprise risk management, and challenges students to learn the methodologies, practical and theoretical, for aligning the key organizational objectives and strategies with principal business risks, both at the management and board levels. Graduates will have the basic tools to structure risk programs in their organizations and boards, along with basics on arranging corporate insurance.
