On-boarding a Chair

    I am looking for a  checklist or template to use when on-boarding a new Board Chair? This is someone who has already been on the Board for almost two years  and has already received a standard on-boarding and will now be moved up to the Chair position.

    I've just been onboarding our Board Chair so am happy to share my checklist below - hope it helps:


    Status Task
    send welcome letter
    CEO and Registrar to welcome Chair
    send welcome email from Governance Specialist
    request executive assistant info
    send meeting schedule for next 2 years
    send administrative email
    note any dietary restrictions
    receive signed Code of Ethics
    receive signed Declaration of Adherence
    receive signed indemnification form
    receive police check results
    receive bio
    format bio for website and distribution
    receive photo
    add meeting dates to Chair's calendar
    schedule orientation day/sessions
    schedule orientation call with Advisory Council Chair
    update/customize orientation sessions/day material
    send Boardvantage access instructions to Chair
    ask x to set up i-Pad for Chair
    CEO to send announcement to All Staff
    CEO to inform Advisory Council of new Chair
    ask x to post new Chair's photo/bio on website
    give payroll, banking forms to be completed in advance of orientation
    send online pay access information
    have Chair complete skills matrix
    ask x to add Chair to ICD/Clear membership
    ask xs to update Board email distribution list in Address Book
    ask x to arrange for Chair site visits

    Please let me know if there are other steps that you take, that I might add to my list.

    We issued a call for expressions of interest to serve as the Chair and had developed criteria for the position.  This was a good starting point to develop the checklist for on-boarding.
