Corporate Seals

I have a strange question which I cannot get answered, no matter where I go.  As a paralegal at a major oil and gas firm, I naturally have inherited various Corporate Seals (ongoing mergers/acquisition are the nature of the beast!).  I don't know if they should be kept for posterity or destroyed.  If they should be destroyed, I can’t find anyone who will take them.  The seal itself is lead and shouldn’t be added to the landfill.  The remainder of the stamp is metal.  Seeing as metal is a non-renewable resource I would think that someone would want the metal – these stamps are very heavy.

Does anyone in the organization have any answers to either question?

    1.        Keep or destroy?

    2.       If destroy – how?

I’ve been told to take a hammer to them, I’ve been told to take a belt sander to them, neither of which works for me.  Incidentally, why are these things still made of lead…there must be some other malleable metal which could be employed.

In Vancouver we order our corporate seals from BC Stamp Works who will recycle our old corporate seals.

Interesting question.  There is a lead recycler in B.C., Metalex, but they mention only recycling of batteries.  Might be worth contacting them to see if they’d take seals.

We have used Dye & Durham in the past to destroy our old seals.  A fee was charged for the service.  Not sure if they still offer this service
